Ode To An Unrequited Love

Written By David E. Young , 2007
I somehow managed
To rise this morning.
My eyes were bloodshot
From nights of crying.

Instead of clear white,
They were dark and red.
I wondered if I
Should just stay in bed.

I let love slip away;
I did not hold tight.
And now there's no sleep
Through the purp'lish night.

Even though I knew
She didn't love me,
I could not help but
Give my love sweetly.

My blue eyes were hers,
And my damaged heart.
I knew she would weave
Her lies from the start.

And even though I
Knew she was untrue,
My heart would never
Give up, through and through.

It just goes to show
What a fool I am;
To love such a one,
Who's love is just a sham.

It wasn't just looks
And beautiful skin
or golden blond hair,
But also her brain.

She's smart as can be,
And sure took me in,
And then dropped me down
To darkness and pain.

Now when I notice
Green new budding leaves
Or hear a red dog
Bark at its fleas,

Or anything else
This world may offer,
I die more inside;
For I still love her.
